Gorkhi Terelj National Park - Mongolia Map

By paved road, Gorkhi Terelj National Park is 65 kilometers northeast of Ulaanbaatar. Visitors' favorite sight includes tall granite stone mountains with northern slopes blanketed in forest, many meadows filled with wildflowers, and spectacularly shaped boulders created by wind. Rapidly moving rivers and streams enhance the beauty of the national park.

Ger camps surrounded by mountains and grassland in terelj National park Mongolia

Staying a few overnights at a nomadic herding camp is one of the highlights of Trans Mongolian Railway vacations. While gently savoring your fermented yak's milk, you will witness the way of life of a friendly nomadic family while sleeping in a cozy portable ger.

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is located nearby Ulaanbaatar and is a tranquil scene of rolling hills, endless skies, and grazing animals.

Khuvsgul Freshwater Lake - Mongolia Maps

The lake is one of seventeen prehistoric lakes that are older than two million years. It would be a great idea to make a tailor-made adventure trip to Mongolia's this lake surrounded by beautiful scenery and landscape.

The Khuvsgul lake contains four islands that are mostly woodlands and partially stony. The largest island has a 6 sq. km. surface area. Numerous bird species use the islands as crucial breeding and nesting grounds.

Ten distinct species of fish and 44 various water flora have habitats in Lake Hovsgol. There are 750 different plant species on its beaches.

258 of the 291 bird species are migratory, and 68 animals, 10 percent of which are endemic, are present in the lake area. Lake Hovsgol was designated as a national park in 1992.

Gobi Desert - Mongolia Tour

Due to its landlocked location as well as a hostile environment that veers between the blistering sun and frigid cold, barely providing 200mm of rainfall yearly, the Gobi desert is among few deserts on Earth with nomadic culture, ancient civilization, and history.

The Mongolian Gobi is the fifth-biggest desert in the world and the largest and coldest in Asia. Northern and northwestern China, as well as southern Mongolia, are all covered by the Gobi desert.

The Gobi desert area is elevated at about 1500 m above sea level and covers an area of 1.3 million square kilometers, making it the fifth-largest desert in terms of size. The Himalayas obstruct weather and prevent rain from the south from reaching the desert.

Orkhon Valley

When planning a Mongolia Tour to the Central part of Mongolia, Orkhon Valley can be one of the best places to visit during Mongolia travel. Orkhon Valley is situated in northern Mongolia, north of the province of Ovorkhangai, and around 360 kilometers southeast of Ulan Bator.

This site, which has been under UNESCO protection since 1992 and is situated at the base of the Khangai range, spans 121.967 hectares along the Orkhon River. Additionally, a 61.044-hectare buffer zone is also secured.

Because numerous successive nomads have lived in the valley since the prehistoric era, the Orkhon River basin is home to numerous historical relics.

Because it connected East and West in the center of the vast Eurasian continent, this region is frequently regarded as the birthplace of the nomadic steppes civilization and was a true meeting place for civilizations over the last millennium.

Equestrian Statue of Genghis Khan

Genghis Khan is depicted in this statue riding a horse, as the name would imply. What is maybe less obvious is that the statue is enormous—really enormous—40 meters in height.

Due to the size of the Genghis Khan equestrian statue, travelers can enter it and view various locations. The visitor is welcomed upon entry by a large leather Mongolian boot and a copy of Gengis Khan's fabled golden whip.

The 250-ton steel Ghengis Khan statue, which is 40 meters tall and perched atop a visitor center, gives the overall impression that it is significantly taller. Each of the 36 pillars in the center represents one of the famous historical Mongolian Khans.

You can also visit the art galleries to see the artifacts and ancient things, particularly from the Ghenghis Khan period in the museums.

Altai Mountains - Mongolia Trip

In the furthest Bayan-Ulgii province, the Altai Mountains are a hiker's dream. Two of the nation's most stunning festivals are held in this region, which is also the home of well-known Kazakh eagle hunters. Mongolia's far western Bayan-Ulgii province shares borders with both China and Russia.

Huiten Uul, one of the five peaks of Tavanbogd where the 3 countries converge, is the highest peak and measures 4373 meters. The highest mountain is Mt. Belukha in the Russian Altai.

There are about 20 glaciers in this mountain range, with the Potanina glacier being the biggest. This is the only area in Mongolia that has enough variety to allow for a week or more of hiking in this region.

Many endangered species, including the argali sheep, ibex, snow leopard, rock ptarmigan, and Altai snowcock, can be found in the Altai.

Karakorum - Ancient Capital of Mongolia

In the thirteenth century, Karakorum served as both the Mongol Empire's and the Northern Yuan's capitals. It is situated on the northeastern slopes of the Khangai Mountains and on the right bank of the Orkhon River.

Only 32 of the city's 140 years of existence were spent as the capital. Ogodei, the son and successor of Chinggis, established the Karakorum as a diplomatic and commercial hub throughout his reign.

Temple and Ruins of Karakorum Mongolia

The Ogodei palace was constructed mainly for official receptions; they did not reside there but rather established camps in the surrounding territories. The city has a rather nomadic look.

Sadly, even though Chinese armies destroyed the Karakorum in 1388, a few dispersed ruins still stand as a testament to the once-grand city. Additionally, Karakorum's ruins, like the Erdene Zhuu monastery, were reconstructed by earlier Mongolian prime ministers.

As a portion of the neighboring Orkhon River Valley, Karakorum has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
