Erdenet City is the capital of Orkhon province and the third biggest city in Mongolia with a population of around 90,000 people. It is an industrialized city heavily dependent on the Erdenet Mine. The city was founded in 1973 to house miners and workers of Erdenet Mining Company and in the early days of Erdenet City only 7800 people lived in town. Besides the mine there are a couple of industrial company that held up the city economy namely a carpet company called “Erdenet Khivs” and “Erdmin”, a copper processing plant. Erdenet is connected to Ulaanbaatar via highway and railroad and that railroad also connects to the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Chinese Railway system. There are around 30 hotels/motels in town and over 10 camps/resorts around the city. You can see older soviet era style buildings and monuments all around Erdenet.
