Much respected and sacred place for Mongolians is Khentii province - a homeland of Chinggis Khaan. Khentii province is located in a region of great natural beauty, 330km drive from east of Ulaanbaatar. The Khentii mountain range is an ancient and heavily eroded range formed by different geological forces and dominated by bulky sacred Burkhan Khaldun mountain.

A vast national park known as the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area covers parts of Khentii and Tuv provinces. Being a birthplace of Chinggis Khaan, or Temujin, this region is the heartland of Mongolia with many historical attractions related to the Chinggis Khaan. According to the “The Secret History of the Mongols” (the most significant native Mongolian book of Chinggis Khaan), Dadal soum of Khentii province is a birthplace of the great khaan.

The Dadal is the stunning place abundant with lakes, rivers and forest. Beautiful Khukh Lake is historically significant place where Temujin proclaimed leader or khan of the Khamag Mongol tribe in 1189. First established in 1784, the Baldan Bereeven Monastery once housed 8000 monks with temples made of local stone and wood, thick walled Tibetan style monastery is another charm to this region. The place is rich in mineral springs and mud baths for visitors from outside. Most notable is Avarga Toson where a huge “ovoo” pile of cairns, decorated by blue silks, overlooks the gorgeous lake. The mud on the lakeshore has carbonate and is renowned for healing effect on the dermatological and cardiovascular diseases.

The dominant ethnic group belongs to hard-working Buryat tribes, semi nomadic people who are great at producing beautiful log houses, delicious butter, cream, wild berry jams, and locally branded breads. Galshir soum of Khentii province is famous for their legendary race horses who win the national races regularly, and horse trainers are well known in Mongolia. Driving through this historically important but stunningly beautiful place brings you unforgettable excitement.
