A perfect spot relatively close to Ulaanbaatar (100km west)

Khustain (Hustai) National Park provides more of a "wild" experience all the year round. The core reason many people visit this park is to observe the Takhi (Przewalski's) horses, the last remaining wild horse species in the world.  During the summer months the Takhi horse head to the ridges to escape the increasing heat - they come down into the valleys at the cooler times of day. It’s worth spending at least one night in the park, as you are most likely to see takhi and other wildlife at dusk or dawn. However, as with all wildlife, they can prove to be elusive.
If you are looking for a spot relatively close to Ulaanbaatar for a weekend getaway, where you can see some primitive and unspoiled terrain, this is a place you shouldn't miss.

Itinerary

Day 1. Ulaanbaatar - Hustai National Park

Pick up your rental vehicle (Pick Up Point or delivery service) and drive 100 km west from Ulaanbaatar. Get you entrance tickets in the camp which is on the left, once you reach the welcome sign to Hustai National Park. But take a break and visit the museum to learn more about the history of the park before you enter. If you want to see the takhi horses, evening is the best time to find them. Usually they hide out high in the hills during the day, but in the evening they come down to the Tuul River which runs through the park. Drive into the center of the park first and walk from there. Explore natural landscape and wildlife – a great place for photos. Find a nice spot for overnight camping outside of the park.

Day 2. Hustai National Park - Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast, continue to explore the area. There are two main trails within Hustai National Park.
1. Shorter trail: about 36 km return. Generally you can see ample wildlife before the conclusion of this trail you may choose to return to the camp, this will make the overall tour shorter than expected. Animals you can expect to see include: Przewalski's horse, Siberian marmot, Red deer, it's also possible to observe Raptors here.
2. Longer trail: about 80 km return. Along with seeing the above mentioned wildlife, this trail passes by an array of ancient historical monuments, such as rectangular graves, sepulture graves, man-shaped stone collections, and deer stones.
After you finish your tour though the park, drive back to Ulaanbaatar, return your rental car and end the trip.
